1953年12月28日，理查·克萊德門出生在巴黎一個世世代代為家具製造商的家庭。6歲開始學習彈鋼琴，12歲時被巴黎國立高等音樂舞蹈學院破格錄取。他從音樂學院畢業以後，偶爾做一些伴奏和樂隊的兼職。

1976年，製作人兼作曲家奧利維·圖桑相中了他，決定讓他演奏《給愛德琳的詩》（Ballade pour Adeline）。此單曲一鳴驚人，創下了在38個國家2千2百萬張的銷售記錄。從此以後，他開啟一位鋼琴演奏家的音樂生涯，錄製了1000多首鋼琴演奏曲，成為了世界上最成功的通俗樂器演奏家之一，在世界各地賣出了7千萬張專輯。在高峰期，曾創下在250天內演出200場的紀錄。
