Artist-in-Residence for the 2025–2026 season at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, the Franco-Belgian pianist and London-based artist Antoine Preat presents Fortune’s Fool, a rich encounter between Haydn and Prokofiev. Second album for the nave label, following All That Surrounds Us (2024), this seemingly unexpected pairing proves deeply inspired, supported by a carefully chosen selection of works: two sonatas emblematic of the Classical aesthetic, a cycle of short pieces, and a twentieth-century ballet transcription. All, according to this young pianist, possess “a distinctly theatrical dimension that makes their staging imaginable.”
The choice of these two composers is also a matter of the heart. A passionate devotee of the Russian repertoire, Antoine Preat has been performing Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet since the age of twelve. It is from this work that the album takes its title, Fortune’s Fool, a quotation from Shakespeare’s eponymous tragedy. Preat also enjoys performing Haydn, particularly on the fortepiano and in trio settings. His clear and luminous playing reveals his experience with historical keyboards - he studied both harpsichord and fortepiano - bringing an immediate clarity to these contrasting pages, which shift between a sometimes nave charm and an orchestral breadth.
